Astronomy Photographer of the Year Aurorae Winner 2023
I am very honoured to have won the Aurorae Category of Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2023! The competition is run by the Royal Museums Greenwich in London and an exhibition is currently being hosted at the National Maritime Museum in London.
“The judging panel loved the elegant simplicity of this abstract image. We are accustomed to seeing aurora from an earthly perspective with mountains, trees and humanmade structures framing the dancing lights. This photograph offers something different, showcasing the beauty of the aurora in isolation. The composition evokes the arts of brush-painting and calligraphy, which are practiced in many cultures around the world.” – Judge Katherine Gazzard
Brushstroke was taken in Utjsoki, Finland, one of the best places to try and catch the Northern Lights. Join me there in 2024 for Spring Light in Lapland!

Upcoming Group Workshops
“I first saw Monika and her amazing work in a coffee talk presentation and as soon as she wrapped up I was asking about signing up for a day in the mountains. Her passion for her surroundings combined with her incredible talent show in her extraordinary images and also in how she coaches and teaches. We spent a day in the Canadian Rockies and I learned so much about really looking at the scene and thinking about the composition of the image. She is patient and able to explain her process and she challenged me to try new things and I love the results from our day together. I enjoyed our day so much I have already signed up for three more workshops! She’s a photographer I greatly admire and she’s a lot of fun to go out and shoot with!”

Photographing the famous methane bubbles trapped in ice at Abraham is one of the most fun subjects to shoot in winter. As the lake freezes and water levels vary, bubbles become trapped in the ice and the ice cracks in exciting patterns. It’s a photographers dream for foregrounds.

Jasper in June Photography Workshop
June 2-5, 2024
Join Monika in Jasper National Park next June as the park jumps to life with newfound colour and warmth. Historically, the first couple weeks of June is a changing of the seasons in the mountain parks. The last of the winter ice has melted off the lakes, revealing pristine lakes with jaw-dropping reflections. Wildlife is in abundance with elk, moose, & bear sightings common, including newborn offspring. Waterfalls are at their highest flow for the season with the mountain runoff, and alpine wildflowers start to bloom.
