Aurorae WinnerAstronomy Photographer of the Year 2023

“The judging panel loved the elegant simplicity of this abstract image. We are accustomed to seeing aurora from an earthly perspective with mountains, trees and humanmade structures framing the dancing lights. This photograph offers something different, showcasing the beauty of the aurora in isolation. The composition evokes the arts of brush-painting and calligraphy, which are practiced in many cultures around the world.” – Judge Katherine Gazzard

I first saw Monika and her amazing work in a coffee talk presentation and as soon as she wrapped up I was asking about signing up for a day in the mountains. Her passion for her surroundings combined with her incredible talent show in her extraordinary images and also in how she coaches and teaches. We spent a day in the Canadian Rockies and I learned so much about really looking at the scene and thinking about the composition of the image. She is patient and able to explain her process and she challenged me to try new things and I love the results from our day together. I enjoyed our day so much I have already signed up for three more workshops! She’s a photographer I greatly admire and she’s a lot of fun to go out and shoot with!”

Book Monika

“Monika Deviat is one of the most inspiring women I know. She’s an incredible photographer, adventurer, educator and speaker – although the latter hasn’t always come easy for her. I first asked Monika to be a speaker at our inaugural Lightchasers Nature Photography Conference and while I knew behind the scenes that she was very nervous, she was bold and inspiring in her delivery and came across as an absolute boss as she understood the importance of representing women in an arena often dominated by men. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of watching her confidence soar as she steps more and more into speaking roles, sharing her experiences with others and inspiring other women (and men!) young and old to step out of their comfort zones and embrace a more adventurous life.” – Shane Turgeon, Founder of the Lightchasers Conference
